Shushensky Bor National Park was founded in 1995. Its establishment was caused by the need to find a compromise between protecting the unique nature of the region, human economic activity and recreational nature management.

Park belongs to the most important category of specially protected natural areas of the federal importance. In addition, it is environmental, research, ecological and educational institution.
The territory of the park is located at the junction of two natural climatic zones: forest steppe and mountain taiga. It consists of two cluster forestries: Perovski (forest steppe zone, 4383 hectares) and Gorny (mountain system of Western Sayan, 34817 hectares). The total area of the National Park is 39,200 hectares, the distance between the cluster sites is 72 kilometers. The administrative building with the visitor center is located in the village of Shushenskoe. The park compares favorably with the transport accessibility and its harmonious inclusion in the existing network of protected areas of the Russian Federation (Sayano-Shushenski Narture Reserve, Khakassia Nature Reserve).
More than 840 plant species grow in the territory of Shushensky Bor National Park. Thirteen of them are listed in the Red Data List of the Russian Federation. There are more than 270 bird species (27 of them are listed in the Red Data List), four species of amphibians, five species of reptiles, 59 species of mammals.
The area of Shushensky Bor National Park is characterized by combination of natural and socio-economic factors that cause the development of cognitive and ecological tourism. The prevailing form is ecological excursions: foot, transport and combined. The network of recreational facilities was created: specially equipped recreation areas, parking, reservoirs for swimming. Perovskoye forestry of Shushensky Bor introduces its visitors to the variety of natural and historical objects.
These are extrazonal pine forest strips along the right bank of Yenisei River, arboretum with typical and introduced plants, landscape relics (there are Butakovo and Perovo lakes), museum of the history of forestry, school experimental training site, historical objects (Leninsky hut, Sandy and the crane slides, birch grove and others). The mountain forestry of the park consists of beautiful pristine landscapes, alpine meadows, waterfalls and unique glacial lakes (the most famous of them are Venice and Banzai lakes). In a hike to the peaks of the Borus ridge, you can observe the change of altitudinal zones in the mountains.
Shushensky Bor National Park is an important link in the network of protected areas of the Altai-Sayan mountainous country. It predetermines the high importance of its recreational potential both in the Russian Federation and in the foreign tourist market.
Tourist routes
“Visiting Berendey”
The excursion ecological route passes in the vicinity of Shushenskoye urban village. There are 170 trees and bushes, growing in the territory of arboretum Berendey. You will have a possibility to see a house on chicken’s legs and a sundial. Also, you will hear the history of the park’s creation and the basic rules of conduct in protected natural area. Duration of the route is 1.5 hours.
“EcoBorus”
The excursion ecological route passes in Shushensky District through the territory of the Mountain forestry of Shushensky Bor National Park. The length reaches 9.5 kilometers, the duration is from 4 to 6 hours. The mode of transportation is mixed: pedestrian and transport. The route begins and ends in the visitor center of Shushensky Bor National Park in Talovsky creek. Objects of the excursion are animals, plants and mountain landscapes in the park.
“Sayan contrasts”
The excursion ecological route passes in Shushensky District through the territory of Shushensky Bor National Park and the water area of Sayano-Shushensky reservoir. The length reaches 30 kilometers, the duration is from 3 to 4 hours. Excursion is operated from June to September. The mode of transportation is mixed: transport and water. The route begins in the gulf of Dzhoy Sosnovka. It is a boating along the Sayano-Shushensky reservoir to the Katushka waterfall on the ship “Yaroslavets”. On the route, excursionists have the possibility to become acquainted with the history of the construction of Sayano-Shushenskaya Dam and the creation of a reservoir, its influence on ecology of coastal zone, flora and fauna of the coastal zone adjacent to the water area of the reservoir, and Katushka waterfall as one of the most interesting natural objects.
